Competiton Entry for Volume Zero TreeHouse

Location: Marari Beach, Kerala, India

Team: Aaradhana Aiyappa, Ann Sankey

From the brief: β€œThe design should centre around a unique character, one that reinforces and maximises our relationship with Nature. The proposed design may also consider modern technological advancements in architecture to make the tree-house archetype adaptive to its surroundings, making it a comfortable home by eliminating any type of hazards.”

Located at Marari Beach, Kerala, the treehouse draws visual inspiration from the fishing nets along the Kerala coast.

The approach to the design of the tree house was to tap into the inherent property of the coconut tree being able to bend to about 50 degrees to inform the overall form. The BENDER Is split into the skin, exoskeleton, pipes for sea water desalination and a net framework for Open Sea, Closed-loop, Aquaculture.

Parametric tools are used to control the sunlight filtering into the space, by varying the size and location of apertures on the skin. The spatial quality of the interior space has been designed as an integrated module that enhances the features of the surroundings using ambient lighting effects created by the opening as well as ambient light features within.

Bespoke cross-laminated CNC structural components that fit together to form the overall exoskeleton. Net system of the main tent like suspended body, hydroponic pipes and fishing nets for the aquaculture form this tensioned system.
