UN-ENMESHED

KNITTING TOGETHER THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC DOMAIN

Graduate Institutions Studio, 2017

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Professor(s): Cyrus Penarroyo

The project redefines the notion of a public building primarily in the private realm, i.e, the Fire Station. Drawing inspiration from the metal hinged door, iterations of lattice and frames create all the elements of a building. The density of each mesh structure then defines the level of privacy within. It also creates a semblance of openness without revealing the private nature of the enclosed spaces. By visually opening up the Fire Station, the project reimagines the once private domain and engages the public. The first floor of the building acts as a street connector, drawing in the public and breaking the barrier to the adjacent children’s museum.
